Dead Letter Postcard, originally created for the Brattle Theatre's Annual Art House Auction, is an absurd self-portrait. The video was inspired by the announcement of the last space shuttle launch in 2010 and the recurring theme of the dead astronaut from the work of J.G. Ballard.
I think of the piece as a small, elegiacal painting or postcard, belatedly sent to, but never received by, the astronaut dreams of my youth.
"[V]iolating the heavens with a technology inseparably entwined with violence and death, with our deepest destructive drives, makes the space program a multi-layered, contradictory, and ultimately dangerous assemblage whose overall emblem is the dead astronaut…” - Umberto Rossi: A Little Something About Dead Astronauts
